What Would Willie (Nelson) Do?

Just 10 miles south of Hillsboro, in Abbott, country singer Willie Nelson was born on April 29, 1933. He used to go with his grandparents to the gospel singing on the Hill County Courthouse lawn as a child which is where he found his love for music. When the Courthouse burned on New Years Day in 1993, he held two concerts on the square to raise funds to restore it.

While in school at Abbott High School, Nelson sang and played guitar for a band called The Texas (formed by himself and his sister's husband, Bud Fletcher). They played in honkytonks and had a Sunday morning spot on Hillsboro's radio station, KHBR - 1560 am.

Nelson has an extensive career in country music that transcends through decades. He's received a multitude of awards, most recently receiving a Grammy for Best Country Solo Performance in 2020.
